Here is a link to a product that can be used as a pre filter for water coming from bottom drains. Any thoughts on it's effectiveness on removing solids before they are pumped up to the biofiter? This would be used instead of a large settling tank. We've sort of put the project on hold for the time being until we get this thing engineered properly. My contractor has never built a pond this large and is open to whatever is appropriate. It's part of a watergarden, so most everything needs to be hidden. If this product peaked my interest!

Hi,

I am "upgrading" my tiny pond (digging it all up and starting over) and I was wanting to know what type of liner would be best (with cost consideration) for a 27LX16WX4D pond with a 5' waterfall at one end. I am figuring a liner (hopefully one piece) that is 35'X 45'. I live in Lebanon, Oregon (Near Albany). Does anyone have any ideas on the type, EPDM, etc. and a source that is as reasonable as possible anywhere in my general area (Salem to Eugene) or somewhere that ships where the shipping isn't more than the liner :)

I will be keeping Koi and possible Goldfsh in the pond with plants, etc.

Thank you in advance for your help.

I have a Hayward sp-2000-z-3 above ground pump. Was getting it out to run my barrel filters. After plugging it in and testing it out before I hooked it up. I noticed loud grinding and right away that a bearing dried out and rusted.

Took it completely apart and and had a question. I run into motors constanly at auctions. Will any basic 1 phase 120v motor work? Or are they different? Don't rememeber the GPH but it was a lot. If I put a 1/2 HP or lower RPM motor in, will that help lower my GPH if I wanted?

Thanks, Kenneth.

Hi All,

I've started a backyard koi pond project and am looking for some advice on it's construction. The design will be a formal, raised pond (2.5' below ground & 1.5' above). I am about to pour footings which will be roughly on an 8'x4' perimeter. Based on these specs, I am anticipating a 900+ gallon pond. EPDM Liner will be used. My question is, will the "smaller" cement block support this pond or, do I have to move up to a standard size block? In either event, my plan is to use stone veneer to finish the design.

I move my goldfish into the garage for winter. The water temps hover around the 0 to +5 area so the fish just sort of lay there. I have a 100 gallon tub that works great except it takes up too much floor space.
Would there be a problem using a 55Gal drum?? The footprint is way smaller and would fit into my space a lot better. The only thing is the fish don't have a lot of room to move around, 2 ft round x 3 ft deep. Consider these are small fish, 3-5" lengths.

My wife and I just bought a new house that came with a koi pond. It was doing well until a few days ago. We had a few things happen all at once. The water got murky, the fish knocked over a potted plant, and the pump for the skimmer box & waterfall is acting up. We got the plant vertical and talked to someone who told us they believe the murkiness is due to the previous home owner leaving with the UV light, which cause excess algae. So those to problems are pretty much resolved.

My BIG problem is when the water went murky, I also noticed the pump in the skimmer box was almost sucking air. I reached around the pump's intake and found it covered with muck, leaves, and pine cones. After cleaning it out, my waterfall, about 1 to 2 feet high, got a lot faster and louder! The problem I have is, it seems like the water is flowing WAAAAY too fast into the skimmer box. The level of water in the skimmer box is always a lot lower than in the pond itself, no matter how much water I add. So the skimmer flapper constantly lays down to allow water to flow into the skimmer. My pump is a Beckett 3500. It looks like the thing can move 3500 gallons of water per hour. But the person who looked at my pond said it looks to be about 1000 gallons. I was thinking about installing either a ball valve or a gate valve right after the pump before the water makes it into the pvc pipe leading it to the water fall. Is that a good idea or a bad idea? My filter is not adjustable, so this seems like the only way to slow the flow of my water.

Sorry for being so long winded! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I currently have a 120 gallon preformed pond with a 30 gallon preformed pond as a bog filter. The setup is doing remarkably well and the fish are healthy. (black moors and fantail goldfish).

The fantails have bred and we now have too many fish and don't want to give them up just yet. (Actually, this was an excuse to go bigger!)

Anyhow, I am getting a new fiberglass tub that was supposed to be used for transporting cream in it but I am getting it before it gets used. It's 4x4x2 feet so 240 gallons.

I ordered a piece of pond liner that is 8x5 and plan on making a stream that is about 2 feet wide 12" deep and 5 feet long in between the old pond and new one. The plan is to empty the 120 and keep the fish in a kiddie pool while i do the reconstruction. I am going to cut a piece out of the side of the existing pond and the new one to accomodate the stream and glue in the pond liner between them.

First off, has anyone done this?

Second, some of the guys over at Monter FIshkeepers have used loctite marine sealant to seal the liner to pvc pools. I was wondering would it do well for this application.

Sorry to be long winded but the new "pond" and the liner will be here friday and I was hoping to get started this weekend. I will take pics of the progress.

Thanks,

I am trying to figure out if I have a good flow rate for a 32 gal upflow filter that is built as so:
32gal rubbermade brute trash can That has a 2" dump at the center bottom. 8" settlement chamber at the bottom. 2" filter mat (scrubbie like matterial that is white that you can get at most the fish stores around here) cut to fit, put into layers the entire way up until about 8" from the top. 2" drain at the top for out flow that goes into a 9" wide water falls that dropes about 3-4". The water comes in via a 500gal @ 0 head pump that after everthing is said and done drops to about 350gal/Hour, is being pumped in to filter in 1" piping that goes down the center and tees and is shoot out of 2 90 elbow that create a cyclone action.
I had this filter working on a 100 gallon stock tank that I was using to quarintine 2 koi that were 5" long. I loaned it out to a friend that may or may not have killed off the good bacteria inside.
I now have it hooked up to a 150 gallon tank (built to a small scale of what I saw Jameskoi built in his basement, Thx Jameskoi). It has 10 new koi I bought (wrote about them in a different thread). I have been doing wholesale water changes (50percent or more) one to two times a day trying to keep the amonia under control.
It may be that the bacteria just has to re-estamblish and everything will be fine but it is also possible that the bacteria is still there and it just can't keep up. So, I am just asking if anyone else can tell me the optimal flow rate for such a filter or if I may need to add some more oxygen?
Some pictures:

Hi
New to the site..

I had installed an oase 10000 aquamax about 10yrs ago in a small pond/waterfall setup..

The pond is about 3ft wide and 2ft deep, the pump pumps to the top of a 6 or 7 ft long ''river'' , eventually spilling back into the pond over a 1ft wide dropstone..The header height is less then 2ft..So its a small set up..( i hope this makes sense)

I was always informed that this 10000 Aquamax was FAR too big a pump for such a small set-up but to be truthful it was simpy adequate in my opinion. There was never a torrent !

However, the aquamax has after very little use, now stopped to pump the water up the tube to the head of the ''river''..??

The pump STILL pumps, but doesnt seem to push the water up the tube out of the pond anymore?? The impeller turns, the water squirts out, but it now lacks power..

The tubing is clean with no punctures, there is no gunge, the pond is cleaned often, so does anyone know why it fails to pump?

And if this 10000 was too powerful then what other pump may suit? I feel that anything less powerful would be inadequate.

Sorry to be so long winded!!
