I had my waterfall running all winter and one night it got real cold and the opening at the base of the falls froze up and my pump emptied my pond. It left about 3" of water in it and of course before I could thaw out my hose to add water that water froze over. Well I still filled it up hoping that they took cover in the muck at the bottom of the pond. Well the pond finally iced out and all of my fish are swimming around like nothing happened. Next year I shut off the waterfall and just use the heater.

Glad to hear they made it ok. I also sit my pump on a milk crate during the winter as extra protection as well.

You're in Mass...just turn you falls off. Your part of the country is just too cold to keep things going. Your fish will totally be fine.

I have had these fish for going on 10 years and we like the sound of the falls when we are out side (hot tub, fireplace, speakers, nice ambiance) so I thought I would keep it running. I normally use a trough heater when it gets real cold outside but this year I tried something different. I think I will raise the pump and when it starts to get really cold shut it off and turn on the heater, like I used to do. I was going to be really bummed out if they had died.

Thanks again for the tips
