I see that rec.ponds has become a stinking cess pit rather than a
healthy pond, if you'll pardon the analogy. Hence this moderated
group. But how does 'moderation' work? Is there a public-spirited
individual who vets every post, which must take a bit of work and
dedication (what happens when he/she goes on holiday?), or is it
somehow done automatically by filters detecting 'undesirable words,
when messages such as 'how do I tell the sex of my goldfish' might get
deleted?

There are several moderators. All posts go through a rather crude
set of filters which eliminate most (but not all) obvious spam.
duplicates, that sort of thing. The remaining posts are then
individually read before approval. The charter can be found at:
