I read about this today on the cam.misc newsgroup and thought it would
be appreciated here;

It shows nicely how non-ponders struggle to understand the connection we
have with our garden ponds and the fish that swim in them
Personally, I completely understand the pond diggers reasons for burying
the letter.You create something nice where there was once a flat piece
of garden, and can't bare to imagine someone else filling it back in.

About 30 years ago I lived in a Victorian house. It had a demolished
outbuilding that I decided to clear away and dig a pond. I found a
strange construction made out of smooth red ceramic. It was a large
shovel like device that pivoted on two ceramic towers. I thought I had
found some ancient long forgotten machine. Then after digging around
it and deeper down I found a few lines of text on part of the machine.
It wasn't a letter, it was instructions for using a tippler toilet.

It made a great drainage system for the pond.
