Water Chestnut (Trapa natans)

Me again! Sorry to be asking so many questions, but I'm on the steep
part of the learning curve, and most of you here are way out on the
flat bit and will know at least some of the answers.

I've just bought one of these, and one or two leaves have become
detached. They're typical of what I see in illustrations, a triangular
leaf with a stem with a bulbous bit about half way along. Does the
bulbous bit sprout a new plant, i.e. are these leaves worth keeping,
or does the bulbous bit just help the buoyancy, and the detached leaf
and stem are effectively dead and best discarded?
