Some people doodle on their computers with games, web surfing of various
interests, besides just communicating with others. My newest is viewing my state's web cams, run by the DOT. Now some are better than others as far as getting to SEE real scenes other than the road. Anyway.. find the web cam that shows the closest scene to your home town... or your home town. One from my area: http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/traffic/default.aspx?cam=8031 ~ jan ------------ Zone 7a, SE Washington State Ponds: www.jjspond.us |

This is the closest public one, though I suspect there are a few privately owned sites: http://www.gov.ns.ca/tran/cameras/ca...id=Lake%20Echo Unfortunately it's pointing the wrong way - turn 180 degrees and you'd see the scar of the fire that had all my neighbours panicing this weekend (not a problem for me - there are a few bodies of water between it and my home, but three of the 5 possible ways to get to my area were closed by the fire, and the other two are very long detours). If you turned the cam about 150 degrees it would show Osprey nests. Apparently the Ospreys weren't harmed. -- derek |

Here is another one from k and jan's area
http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/traffic/default.aspx?cam=8096 We have several on Snoqualmie Pass which is the main E/W in the middle of the state. We head over it taking kids to college and back. There is one cam that didn't survive one of the winter avalanches - when you click on it a sign comes up 'I fought the avalanche and the avalanche won'. k :-) |

Like, did I mention I live in the desert? The West/Wet side is always trying to fool people we're the Evergreen State, more than half is like this.... only perhaps more sagebrush... so the Everbluegreen State. ;-) http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/traffic/default.aspx?cam=8096 >If you turned the cam about 150 degrees it would show Osprey nests. We do have some wildlife cams, but I haven't saved them. In particular our burrowing owls. For grins, Mt. St. Helens, still no trees after 28 years. http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/traffic/default.aspx?cam=1242 ~ jan ------------ Zone 7a, SE Washington State Ponds: www.jjspond.us |

This is not far from where jan and I live, just down the
hill, right near the delta of the Yakima River. It is one of those terrifying round-a-bouts that are going in now. I still approach the thing with fear and loathing... http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/traffic/secam.aspx?cam=8082 (though DH and I road bikes thru huge ones in England and survived). I've been looking thru road cams this afternoon to track a storm coming our way - DH is out with a bunch of scouts and darned if his cellphone is out of power (did call him yesterday about the fish in the pump inlet). k :-) |

It saves time, gas, and is much less prone to serious crashes. Intersections are horrible wasters of gas and time, and the speed and angle of cars going through them almost guarantee a crash. I wish they would wipe out all intersections, especially 4-way stop signs. You DO have to pay attention tho. Perhaps that is why we Americans hate roundabouts, you have to actually drive like you are in control of the vehicle and not vice-versa. Chip |
