I recently added a few water hyacinths to my pond, and somehow they have connected to each other. Is this normal, should I split them up again?

You can let them grow into a large mass or separate them if you want. It's a good sign that they are growing new plants off the mother plant. They are easier to control if you leave them connected and they tend to grow larger that way.
