Sunfish in ponds?
Does anyone keep fish other than Koi or Goldfish in their pond? Anything
like sunfish or other domestics? If so, what are your general
comments/thoughts/precautions about doing so? Thanks.

I keep some rosy reds but they keep dying out for some reason. I never see
the bodies so assume something is having them for dinner. They're in the
one pond that's not netted.

I was told by several pond places that you take the risk of parasites &
diseases when adding wild fish.

I kept Orfes in with the koi. Orfes are good at birth control. Smaller
fish are food to GF and koi. Ingrid

Out here in Southern California, mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) are
encouraged for all ponds for the prevention of West Nile. I have quite a
bunch in my pond, and the goldfish don't seem to bother them.

Isn't that true of any new fish you add to the pond?

I also keep a few rosy reds. They're more active than the goldfish. My
pond is very small (130 gallon preformed), so I can't keep many goldfish.
The painted turtle is happy, though.

I'd never heard of them, apparently native to Europe. How large do they
grow?

I think that is true of captive bred fish as well but sunfish do not have
be wild; there are plenty of places that sell them.

========================
Is the population of your rosy reds staying stable or dropping? We're not
sure what's happening to ours.
