Hey guys, my dad just bought this plant from Shopko. It looks like an elephant ear but I'm not sure if that's what it is. Will it survive in my pond? Should I keep the crown above the water or will it be okay below? If you guys have advice that would be great.

^Ew gross that photo is out of focus... oops.

Thanks,

Zack

Yup. It's an elephant ear. I grew that exact variety in my patio pond last year. Put it in a bigger pot, keep the crown above water and it will do great. It's not hardy, so either treat it like an annual or plan to bring it in for the colder months. I've kept mine alive for several years in a row - and I'm not a house plant person, so that's kind of a miracle!

Keep an eye on this one. It IS suited for use as an aquatic plant, but this is one of the varieties that sends out runners in all directions and can quickly cause headaches trying to keep it under control. It already has 3 babies.

Probably not a BIG problem in Northeast Nebraska.

I've overwintered the bulbs in my crawl space with success. I pull the plants at the ned of the season anklet the bulb dry, then pack in paper bags of vermiculite. Ironically, I have some that come back each year, that in the ground - go figure!

I leave mine in the ground but put lots of mulch over them ,but the 2010 winter killed them off and also killed the red stem ones too
