While on-line shopping for new water lilies, I started noticing mention of different types of rhizomes -- I thought all "hardies" were the same.

So, as far as these different types go....

  1. is there any difference in the way the the plants grow?
  2. in the way they should be planted?

Pineapple
Odorata
Marliac
Tuberosa
Upright

Nope, to me they are just tubers, stick them in let them grow.

Odorada has a very fast growing rhizome that will escape its pot in one season. it should be potted close to one corner of a wide pot and pointed toward the opposite corner.
Marliac grows in a similar fashion, but not nearly as fast.
mexicana and some of it's hybrids grow vertically like tropicals and don't need such a wide pot.
I'm not sure about the others. You could look it up at watergardenersinternational.org

Quick question @addy1 . since I'm still fairly new to water lilies, I'm wondering how long I can let my lilies can go before they outgrow my 2-3 gallon pots?

Depends, my colorado could use grooming every year, the mayla does fine for a few years. I have left them alone for more than 2 years without issues. They just start sending tubers out of the pot. Once they get real big I would rather groom them then let them take over the pond and they get real heavy.
