Hello everyone,
I inherited a small pond after moving house which I re-dug and is now 5m x 2m x 1m and holds about 10,000 litres of water. A friend gave me some filters which have worked ok until the last few months, when I’ve had very bad blanket weed in the pond which has blocked up the filter brushes and foams every few days. I’ve made a small pre filter trying to stop some of the weed before it gets into the main filter. This has worked ok but it’s not the best solution. (I’ve included some pics so you can see the filters and the pond.)
Any ideas what type of filters would be best for me or should I stick with what Ive got ??, I’ve got 12 sml Koi about 150cm & 10 assorted gold fish which were given to me.
Alongside the filters are 2, 36w UVC.

Any ideas will be much appreciated

I have had a similar blanket weed issue over winter, and the only way I have managed to sort it was to religiously clean the pre-filter cages of the pumps every day or tow (depending on how much the flow rate has been affected). When I cleaned the pre-filter cages, I used a pressure washer to clear as much as possible of the algae off of the enclosures, as even a small bit will spread rapidly. Also added a couple of "socks" of barley straw to help. Adding white filter matting also went a long way to clearing what made its way in to the filter box itself and also removed the top layer of this media after clearing the pumps. I also changed the main media in the filter boxes from foam/sponges to Flo-Cor, which did not clog as easily as the closer cell media did.

The wife had an idea to buy a cheap white pillowcase (not an old one that had been washed due to not wanting to risk any problems from possible detergent left on the fabric from previous washes) and to place this over the exit pipe of the filter boxes, and it is surprising what is collected in it, even though the water looks crystal clear on exit back to the pond.

When I had issues in the summer last year, I found that draining the pond down so only 1/3 of the water was left and then manually "scrubbing" the sides with a soft bristle hand brush to remove a lot of the algae from the sides of the pond before refilling helped as well, as did adding a dozen or so 9cm through to 1 litre pots of plants.

It may seem like a lot of work to do this, but it is rewarding and not really a chore when you see the end result.

Thanks Darren, Ive ordered new filter foams and brushes (as mine are looking very tired) which should help. The pre filter i made is taking lots of blanket weed out so the main fiters dont block as quickly and the the barley straw is working well getting rid if the weed in the pond this is why theres so much in the filters.

Is the stuff in the filters dead or alive? Dead blanket weed will be collected by the flow of water & once taken out will help. Tedious job but worth it long term.

I prefer the barley straw approach simply as it is hard to over do it. A miscalculation with the water capacity & overdose with peroxide is easily done. I also have a large green drum with water & barley straw in it so I can use this with a water change if needed.
