Questions that come to mind.
'Tank' and '1000 gal pond' Which is it. If tank, is it metal. How long have
the fish been there.......is it new, size/age of fish ??
Is it filtered? What is water temp? Etc
Laying on the bottom is normal for winter. More info please Ron

Ron, I've been out of active Koi water care for a while now. Without
information on how long Moogie has had the pond and fish, water chemistry,
aeration, filtration (including some idea of rate), I can't see how anyone
can offer any real help. Why can't Moogie subscribe to this group? It's not
a binary group, after all. There may be more to this than meets the eye.

Hi Pete,
If its ok with you, I'll repost your reply in rec.ponds, without
your name. I agree that there are a lot of unanswered questions, and
also "Moogie" has not had any follow-up messages in rp. My guess is
that the other koi probably died, and that "moogie" has just given up
and lost interest in further contact.
I do believe that it was a legitimate post, but probably by a
frantic owner who wasn't sure where to go for help.

Hi Nick,
I completely agree that there were many unanswered questions.
Please see my reply to Pete. I think it was a legitimate post, but by
a frantic owner who just hastily posted to rp without giving a lot of
thought to giving details. He or she has not made any follow-up posts
to rp, so my guess is that the other koi also died, and the owner has
just lost interest in pursuing the matter any further.
My sense of the first post was that his or her main interest was
in saving the fish, not going through all the effort it _sometimes_
takes to get subscribed to this group. It can be a real challenge.
More isp's and nsp's than not will not/do not carry rpm, and it can be
difficult for a person not too familiar with newsgroups to find a free
nsp, or set up with google.
The fact that rpm is not carried by a large number of nsp's has
really hurt the growth potential of this group. But nearly all of
them carry the trashed "rp" group. What an injustice for ponders!
I did advise "moogie" to try and get rpm, but his or her first
priority was to look for quick help before the 2nd fish died.
Unfortunately, I think it did, and my guess is that moogie doesn't
care about communicating any more. But its _only_ a guess on my part.

It's such a shame when someone desperately needs help and can't find it.
With RPM not being carried by a lot of providers, a forum might provide a
more accessable source of help. I'm a moderator on one such forum with some
very helpful and very friendly members. I won't publish the name here, but
if you ever need to direct someone who can't get here, just email me for a
link.

Thanks, Ron. I wasn't aware of the fact that r.p.m isn't carried by many
nsp's.
When the group was finally formed, I sent a note to Curt, at
NewsReader.com, asking him to add it. Within minutes (or hours - time means
nothing to me) I had the group.
I'm very sorry about "moogie"'s Koi. I remember how distressed I was
whenever one of mine died. I even did an autopsy on one. <sigh>
Happy New Year to all.
