Any plastic that drains well and has a a lot of surface area will work.

Our local fish guy says he uses the old school plastic hair rollers or curlers.

I have checked out these hair curlers on ebay and have found they work out expensive, I have been saving plastic bottle tops, we buy a lot of these bottles you can even take the tops off of the refundable bottles and the stores still take the bottles back. They are light and move well in the water especially when there is air pumped into the filter.

I have saved several thousand plastic caps from beverages just for this purpose. Using the air stone is a great idea to gently tumble them.
