Can you wash out the old foam with pond water..
If i were going to add any thing new i would put it in with the old so the bacteria has a chance to take hold on the new foam

i cud clean it with pond water. i dont even know if its dirty as i only cleaned it last in november. after i stopped feeding my fish. but i was reading a thing that says change them every 12 month. but if i cud just keep cleaning it would be better. also ive got in the bottom of the filter cut up pipes with ridges in them. are they any good or are the spikey bio balls better. im just getting ready now so i dont have problems like last year. when i had a small pond i had ulcers on some of the fish. but they are healing now i hope. they have gone dark the spot of where they were.

If a were making the new foam ...I would say change it ever 4 weeks
You just need to backwash your filter every week and keep it clean..
not as often during the winter..
Use pond water to clean it

I have a question, why do you guys not use poly strapping. It's like Savio spring flow but really cheap. Easy to clean and never replace it.
