It could be that no one here has any knowledge of these pumps. I only use submersibles and never heard of these.
I will guess that mag drive is an impeller driven by magnets that are reacting to the motor that has magnets on its shaft. If it is, stopping the impeller would not fry the motor.
On a direct drive, if you stall the impeller, you fry the motor. If this is true, then the mag drive would obviously be a better investment.

This is an educated guess. Where I work, we have 2 shaft turbines and the 2 shaft are the safest since a stall on the output will not suddenly stop our turbines. At 10 million $ a turbine, that could be catestrophic.

I use 3 mag drive 1800 in my 4000 gallon pond. I constructed baffles out of 2" PVC pipe, cut into 16" lenghs with 1/4" holes drilled into it and a plastic screened cap on the end. This is better then the foam pre filter that comes with the units, and doesn't need cleaning as much. I will take a pic if you want. Plus it is a safety feature for small fish(they cant get stuck to it) My pond was just set up again and is still cycling but watter quality is good I just have green water at the moment untill the bio filters build up.
I like the mag pump for there efficiency as well. Much cheaper then the old pool pump I was using for my waterfall.

I figured someone else would have answered you with a little more knowledge than me. It is my understanding that mag drives are generally more efficient in terms of watts/gallon moved. Direct drives are more often seen on the larger pumps. I think there is another advantage to the direct drives, but it is not occurring to me at the moment.
