My diy pond from Northern Canada

Its 100% diy by myself, 5 years (3 years with this expanded pond) has underground plumbing to a massive 5 barrel diy filter system designed my myself. It also contains something I have created that I like to call a “tide maker” this creation actually raises and lowers the pond water level by about 1.5 inches ever 20 minutes to feed potted plants around the edge with water and also clears the skimmer of any stuck debris to keep that flowing smoothly. The pond also has a 4 foot waterfall that flows about 5000 gph of water at all times from the filter system. Filter system is fed water from the bottom drain at opposite end of the pond as well as from the top skimmer. I am very proud of my creation.

I had made a small pond about 5 years ago and with no experience with this his sort of thing I had thought that it would be as simple as circulating the water from one end to another with a small pump.. I could not have been more wrong... haha.. I ended up with a pool of green slime that was so thick that I could not find the fish. I spent 2 years of planning the new expansion after that. All modesty aside, it now is simply a work of art.

The pond contains dozens of different types of plants all strategically placed in and around the pond In a very planned layout to stop koi from destroying them. Yes plants can be kept with koi you just need to know how to stop them from ripping them out. There are 14 large koi in my pond, all have names and different mannerism. They range from 10 to 24 inches long. living in the a Northern area of Canada is definitely a challenge as my pond season is from May to September and very hard frost.. I bring the plants and koi inside to the basement pond in my house for the winter.
