Greetings from southern Oregon. My name is Mike and I'm in Klamath Falls near Klamath Lake the Blue Green algae capitol of the world.(This may or may not be true) We have a 3 year old pond in our back yard that I've decided to get more involved with since retiring in March. I perused this site last night and this morning and there is some good info here.
We had the pond put in along with some landscaping and now it's time to get serious about algae control. I have some water hyacinth and an umbrella palm and a gold strike rush. the rush and palm are still in the pots. What is the consensus on potted vs non potted? Our pond is in daylight for a good part of the day and I want to get some more shading on the water. I will post photos soon. Thanks to all.

If you don't have any built in planters or bog areas in the pond, you are going to need to pot them to keep them down in the water.

Hyacinth, float but if you have large fish they will devour them.

Welcome to the forum.

I like potted because the roots can get out of control and you will not be able to get the plant out of the water .With a pot you can pull it trim the roots and divide the plant to get more plants and welcome to our humble sight

Thanks for the welcome. I read else wear in the forum about putting the plant in Dollar store laundry bags to expose more of the root. My wife corrected me (really?) and agreed that I should leave them in the pots.

Unless you have a bog, I think most will agree that leaving them in the pot is best. But you've got -- or so it seems -- a lot of room to play with there. Another retirement project could be to build a bog as additional filtration. Those that have bogs say that algae is never a problem! Love all the rocks!

A toilet bowl will take out the heavy stuff .I put lots of plants in my filters and pot them in kitty litter .I think the grasses and sedges really do clean the pond the best .
