Hello everyone,

I recently moved into a house where there was a pond , but whom ever was here before covered it up with rocks. So me and my partner dug it all out and put some water, especially because we noticed we had some toads and frogs.

We are very new to this, so we have been trying to make the pond good so that we can buy some fish to put in there. But today I noticed something that wasn't there yesterday , and I've researched and still haven't found exactly what it is!

It's like these air bubbles , and arou d it kind of resembles when you put oil In water. Can anyone help me figure out what this is exactly?

Welcome!

So if I understand correctly, you filled the pond with water, but there are no fish in it as of yet. Did you clean it out down to the liner? Or could there have been organic debris (old leaves & etc) left behind?

We didn't open it completely as previous owners filled with gravel, bricks etc... so we technically only opened half of the pond and we did our very best to remove all of the water and fill it I with fresh water. We have it open for a little bit over a month and this is the first time I'm seeing this. I've topped up the water a couple of times as well.

I think you're seeing the results of some organic debris decomposing.

Can you post a picture of the whole pond? It's hard to imagine what you mean by "only opened half the pond".

Sure thing. Thanks for you help! I'm not sure of how deep it acctually is... and I assume it finishes kind of around were my flower with the blue pot is. We made a bridge , the walls and the ramps, with some of the stuff that was in there already. And we took A LOT of it out. So honestly don't know how deep it is. For now it just looks like never ending lol

So you think there's liner that goes all the way under that blue pot? Is the water able to get under there?

Yes a believe so, when we got here we could obviously see the liner on the left hand side, but we never seen the other side.
It might be a case of just a type of compost but it wasn't there yesterday. Whom ever covered it up didn't even bother taking the flowers from underneath or taking the water out before covering... one of the other reasons we opened the pond

I would guess you're seeing the results of whatever was left under there. Honestly I think you will struggle with this pond unless you clean out that other side.

I agree it's some type or decaying organic compound...DOC. Have you considered building a bog on one side of the pond with all the gravel?

@Lisak1 and @addy1 have lots of information on bog building :)

I would guess so, I live in a coastal area but I would guess the water wouldn't be the greatest one. We did test the water thought and everything came out good.

We are going to dig out the rest of the pond tomorrow and see what else is there. See if there's any apparent reason for this to be happening.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is a bog?
A bog is like a shallow pond next to the main pond used for filtration., It's lined, then typically perforated PVC pipes on the bottom, with the gravel over the top. It is planted and water pumped through the bog and spills back into the main pond.

Once the plants fill in, they;re roots do a great job of filtering the pond water. This is a simplistic description.....I'm certainly no expert and I don't have one.....but wish I did :)
