I built my first pond in an area that drew its water from a soft acidic lake. I built a concrete filter box and didn't really have algae. Then I moved to western Tarrant County and the water supply changed. Oops. If it comes out of the tap at 8, it will definitely be a problem to have concrete or limestone in the pond.

sudden onset of algae when new stone added, high pH can be caused by limestone. It has been suggested that I am imagining things. I needed to scan this for a lady with an algae pit built by a professional who used 3.5 tons of limestone gravel in her bog. Now in a place with soft low pH water, that might have worked out. Tarrant county isn't known for soft acidic water. I will let the excerpt speak for itself. I didn't make this up. Page 195. Pond Builder's Bible by Aquascape.
