Last fall I built 2x 2500gal backyard ponds to go with my 700gal stock tank.. Would like a accurate floating gage for each. Ones I got off eBay require magnifying glass to read the tiny scale. I thought of picking up a handheld digital thermometer that look like a pistol, but not sure if they would work for liquid. So any ideas on a readable medium to large DIY floating thermometer or if you have experience with hand held digital type please let me know.

We have, or had (can’t find it right now) an IR thermometer that was pretty accurate. I could aim it around at different things under water in the pond and the readings varied, I just have no idea “where” in the water column I was measuring — if I was getting the temp. of the item vs the temp. of the eater. It probably didn’t make that much difference, though, and I was satisfied when comparing the readings to my digital thermometer. Right now I have a floating “pool” thermometer (I think, from WallyWorld) that has easy-to-read numbers and hash marks.

Hope this helps. Now, all I need to do is find my IR thermometer that’s been missing since we moved 2 years ago.

It looks like this one (pic is from Amazon):

I use a pool floating thermometer too! Less than $5 from Walmart. It’s actually in one of my aquariums now, and gets moved around when I need to check temps.
To prevent it from getting way out in the pond where you can’t check it, attach a line to it so you can pull it close, or even pull it out to check the temp. They can build a lovely coating of biofilm, but that cleans easy with a scrubbie, and is in fact good for the fish, if unsightly.

Id stay away from a floating thermometer. yes i'd be willing to bet theres no glass .but in my pond i'm always doing something and plastic or glass i'd not want that shard to puncture the liner. they have remote thermometers where only a metal probe is in the water.

I looked for a reliable probe/transmitter (remote) thermometer and hesitated because of the tepid reviews. Of course being on the net, reviews are always credible. Yeah, right.
