Ha - I was just going to say what Addy said!

It is so fun to have new baby fish in the pond. It didn't take long for your fish to get busy! You must keep us posted on their progress.

Congrats! (next thing we will hear is how the heck do I get rid of all these fish!);););)
I've thought of this already! Yikes!!!!!!
I have 10 goldfish -- ranging in size from 2 to 6 inches. And some little fellers! Still no ammonia. I wonder at what point it will start to show ammonia?
That's needed to produce the "food" for the plants, right?

As long as there are enough plants and you don't feed the fish a lot it should be awhile before should see any changes .Most bad times are when plants are not growing yet and then people feeding there fish to early

Do the pond plants grow more slowly (or get a later start) than the plants in the ground? We are going to be near 90 here one day this week. All the spring things are done and gone (daffodils, dogwood, azaleas) and we are headed into the early summer stuff -- oakleaf hydrangeas blooming and some gardenias are getting close.
But maybe water temp is colder or something?
Fish have sure been interested in the food. I hope I didn't start feeding them too soon!
The babies are SO CUTE!

Congrats on the little ones! I really like watching babies to see how their colors change. You might actually have a lot more than you think if some are dark colored. Re temps. Your pond is like a heat sink. It retains a given temperature much more than soil and can be quite different than air temp. It's temp doesn't go up or down fast and takes time to change. You may want to get a thermometer for it so you can see how it changes. You probably need the water temp to be in the 60's consistantly to see much growth with your plants.

Well congrats..... It must be something about first time ponds...... I have hundreds of these little Koi swimming around the rocks at the base of my waterfall and in all my plant baskets..... Turns out I misnamed Hillary..... But a little worried it's been 5 days since I first spotted them and it still seems to be just as many.....

@jimmy -- Hooray!
Does that make us fish parents? Or grandparents? I was kidding and telling my teenagers they were fish uncles. They looked at me like I was nuts!
I think I have a couple of batches of babies from different fish. As I was watching the little guys and trying to count them, I noticed more of them -- much tinier! Some are half an inch and some are a quarter inch.
I can spot them, here and there, hiding among the plants and rocks. There are so many places to hide in there -- who knows how many babies there are!!!!
Do the parents eat them? Someone I know said their fish often eat the eggs, so they don't have quite the overpopulation problem they could have otherwise.

congrats jimmy we remember u bought these guys , i think they survive most in the 1st spawn as there are fewer fishes to eat eggs and water quality is good

When we get some good sunshine and the babies get a tiny bit bigger, I will get some pictures. The adults are so weird. I'm trying to imagine getting a good picture.
No wonder fishermen have such a challenging job.
Yesterday, I tossed in just a pinch of food. Probably 12 mini pellets (for very small fish.) They came out of the cave like it was a clown car. They swam around below -- obviously getting interested. Then they came up closer to the surface and acted like they would go for it -- then about an inch from the surface, they'd change their minds and retreat. Finally, the one I call Pig got the eating started. After everyone had a nibble, they all paused at mid-depth, almost lined up, and were absolutely still. What on Earth????? Maybe they forgot to say grace, so they decided to pause for prayer... LOL!
