Ball Valve Placement

i plan on adding ball valves to control water flow into a stock tank. Does it matter how far from the pump or how close to the stock tank the ball valves are placed. Does the placement affect the pumps head pressure and durability?

A ball valve (or any other type of valve) can be placed anywhere along the water transit line between source (pump) and target module.
