calculating amount of water

I like to calculate the volume in cubic inches then divide by 231 to get gallons. It is by far the most accurate method.

First figure the area in square inches
Then multiply that by the average depth in square inches
Then divide the sum by 231 and you will have the gallons.

Some irregular ponds are easier to calculate in segments. For example, my 2 large ponds are round and square, the stream is rectangular. So I calculate each seperatley then add them up and divide by 231.

Some folks use feet then divide by 7.4805 to get gallons. It works but is not as precise as working with smaller increments.
