Can anyone tell me what is wrong with my water hyacinths? (Pic included)

So they were turning black and I read online they might not have had enough nutrients. I made a miracle grow bath and had them sit in it for a day. Now they look worse! What is going on? I did trim off the dead looking parts while they were in the bath. Could this be them recovering? They almost look like parts of them are molting

We just had a similar conversation about water lettuce - sometimes they just DO this and it's hard to say why. Nutrients was a good guess, but it could also be heat, or cold, or fish eating the roots, or they just plain aren't happy. I've found either they grow by the bushel full or I can't get them to grow at all!

My vote is the heat along with the direct sun . Everything I have seen both these plants they are in the cypress swamps where they are in filtered sun . Yes they get direct sun but then a tree sees them for a while.

I don't think that's it as this pic of WH in Florida shows...no trees that I see and they're doing great!

I've found WH don't do well when they don't get enough light and heat and slowly turn black then mushy. The bath would have helped if nutrient neglect was the reason. It might just be the fertilizer bath you gave them burned the roots that were there. I've found WH do best when corralled, too.

I don't know how true this is, but I read that water hyacinths like water that has a pH around 7. When my pond was new and the water's pH was around 7 the water hyacinths grew like crazy. My pH is now around 8 and I can't grow water hyacinths to save my life. So I like to believe it is because of the water's pH not because I can't grow something that is suppose to be so easy to grow!

Might be more beneficial but I'm on well water and it's about ph 8.4 coming out of the ground. My hyacinths grow fine, they just don't seem to flower as much as I'd expect/want.

This is a new tank so I thought it was the lack of nutrients. What is weird is that where the WH are under the water line everything is black on them. I trimmed off all the dead pieces again but they just do not seem happy
