I think so. Go for squatty & short [like me ;) ] rather than tall ones. Less likely to fall over. Or even use deep saucers as planters.

I only use newly purchased ones, though, as what I have lying around the yard, though empty, has most likely been in contact with chemicals such as pesticides. I don't try to clean my old, used ones for pond use, 'cause don't know how/if you could get it all out from being soaked into the clay.

I use walmart oil pans. They do fine in them.

I don't use clay pots for anything that I may need to lift out of the pond - they get too heavy. The lighter they are, the easier to deal with down the road. Lilies especially get really heavy when they get large.

We do have a clay chimney flue in our pond for a fish cave - so no concerns in general about using clay in the pond. It grew a nice layer of algae very quickly so you can hardly tell it's there.
