i've been using this approach for a submersible pump that i like.
i cut 2 large holes in the side of a 5 gallon bucket and wrapped it with
hardware cloth and then a nylon mesh. i secured both with zip ties
to the wall of the bucket. the hose and power cord come out the top.
i tie a rope to the bucket handle and hang it in the pond.

all that fine mesh will stuff up , quickly ... requires servicing on frequent interval ..

i have a 8 K submersible in an old milk crate , lined it with matala mat green . matala blue is a finer gage and acceptable ,, do both , green then blue ..

commercial reference
green and blue

i suggest drill many more holes in the pump containment..
i ran this for +quite a while + before servicing ...pump flow reduced and i serviced and i got , hand fulls of thick mud out of the element // good stuff for the beds
...
currently i have this assembly in a 55 G +leaf trap + feed by 3 inch bottom drain

blue in the bottom , green in the crate .. stuffed with brushes

He says he's been using this system and it's been working for him. Everyone's pond is different.

science and physics .... fine mesh will stuff up and require frequent servicing ...

all ponds are the same .. water .. fish .. aqua life

the execution is the difference
please believe me .. \
a fine mesh screen will stuff up real quick and require frequent servicing ,,
have you ever tried a sand filter in a pond .. .. if there is green water it will stuff up in about 20 min ..
however if you put 1/32 inch grains in there it will run longer ..

thanks for the input everyone. i've found the the mesh i have been using seem not to clog. i have moved away from the plastic bucket for the pump or a pump in the pond. regarding the plastic bucket, the sound and vibrations of a pump in the pond i do not like, sitting in a plastic bucket makes it worse. i recorded the sound of the pump in the bucket inderwater and just the pump and i do not want those vibrations in my pond. i have an inline pump now and i use the bucket to run a flexible hose into and hang it in the pond as i said. works well keeping the fish out of the draw and as a prefilter. i posted in pond construction about the vibrations and the recordings if you want to hear what a pump sounds like recorded with a cell phone inside a mason jar. nothing i want in my fishes pond. give it a try yourselves a see what you think about it.
