GIGGETY-GIGGETY!!
O.K .. this is a tutorial on converting a Doughboy brand diatomaceous earth filter to a bead filter. "K1" type media. (I disassembled and thoroughly cleaned this filter before this build, and thread.)
this is what the internals look like...
bottom of ...basin
top assembly with down pipe and filter "V grid" septums (20 micron).
these filters are an upflow design, so the water enters the filter down the center down flowing pipe and out to flow up thru the media. normally the pictured "V grids" that are coated with diatomaceous earth. (skippy style)
the water flows thru the screen of Vgrids and thru the inner frames.
so you just undo this bottom Vgrid holding assembly by removing the pipe nut from the down pipe. (its threaded)...
then removing the Vgrids is easy, they just lift out...
when all are removed, it'll look like this...
now these holes you see are where the water exits the filter...so you'll want to block them from media getting stuck in them and clogging or obstructing flow. or even making its way into the pond. now I used this dollar store plastic mesh basket. (about 6" diameter). good for bio balls, but K1 may possibly fit thru. if using K1, use a mesh plant basket, or something with a smaller mesh.
notice the ring of 2" pipe... it has a stainless steel screw thru it to lock the media blocking basket in place..
to make filling the basin with media easier, cut the downpipe below the basket and use a coupler. so you can fill the basin with media with most of the pipe sticking up. simply sliding the top part into the coupler.
I cut down the basket..no need for it, full sized...
I think this explains it fairly well. but if you've got a question, go ahead, and ask...thanks for lookin' in!
