is it best to place the deicer in the center of the pond, it's 2 1/2 feet deep there, or near the edge of the pond? Thanks

you want to just keep a hole open; if your deicer is strong enough, it'll still keep a hole open near the edge but were it me, I'd put it nearer the middle BUT have some sort of string/rope to fetch it back when you need it. Yours should be the type that comes on when it hits near freezing and goes off when just a bit higher in outside temp.

When I still used one of these, I also would tie something to the deicer and then to a pole/rope across the pond to keep it upright; had it go sideways once and well, that wasn't so good!
