Dividing lilies

I have two water lilies that have actually gotten out of hand. Being they are hardy lilies, is it too early to divide?

I divided mine around 2 months ago, I have even divided some in the fall.

Its not too early. Many divide before the growing season really gets going since dividing can stop leaves from growing for a couple weeks.

It's not gonna kill them, but like JB said it will slow them down some. Just make sure you have pads coming out of the tubers in each section you divide.
