A lot of you already know from last year that I started lotus from seeds and grew quite a bit in its 22 in pot. I was inspecting the pots today and didn’t see anything emerging yet. Are they dead at this point? It’s late April.. not sure when these normally start emerging back as this is my first time growing it. I had it sunk in my 24 in pond and I’m pretty sure it did not freeze all the way to the bottom.

I just saw one leaf coming up in my lotus tub. I would give it some more time. If you can reach the tuber see if it is mushy.

I pulled the one from my u5 gallon preform. Did not protect it from freezing last winter. Top 10"all black mush. Finally got to 24" deep section and there were leaves coming up. Give it time!

Is there sign of any hope? I can’t tell if these are new leaves. Some were though, last years mush.

Mine hasn't budged yet. Warm this weekend, so I figure we'll start seeing some signs if there's any life left.

Are they really known to emerge that late in the season? You’re in a colder zone than me so I’m guessing your lotus timing is probably normal.. mine might very well be dead. I did submerge them 2 ft deep during the winter and made sure not to cut off any leaves when they got dormant so water doesn’t go through the stem.. even if they say you can once they completely brown I wasn’t gonna take the risk. I did start them late in June last year but they grew across the entire 22 in pot so I thought they got enough energy to tolerate their first winter but they definitely aren’t looking good

Yup. They are slow starters here. I almost give up every year and then BOOM. There they are!

Remember not to fertilize until you get aerial pads.

Still nothing, are they gone for good? How are yours looking in the east?

The ones I divided from mature plants are just now starting to send up aerial leaves. The seedling ones not doing so good. They got hit with 2 frosts so all the small leaves died. I am seeing some new growth starting. Our nighttime temps are still in the 40s but that should end tonight.

My untouched plants in the 300 gl tub have leaves on the surface, none above water yet. Mature plants that have been growing there for years.

So would you guys say my lotus is dead? Why though! No winter freeze, grew a lot enough last year to store enough energy for this year.. I can’t find a logical reason why...

Yours is a lot different from mine. So would you guys say dump them in the compost or wait a little more?
