I have a 550-600 gallon koi pond in my backyard. 2 koi about 2 years old. One recently developed an infection, I believe, involving a fin that got snagged months ago. The wound appeared superficial but now 2 months later it has gotten a bit more red and he appears to be developing Dropsy. I monitor every day and the "fluffy" appearance has become prominent the last 3 days. What are some things I can do to help my little guy out?

Hello and welcome!

There probably isn’t a lot you can do, as dropsy is almost 100% fatal once it develops to the point where you recognize the signs. You might try the site KOIPHEN.com. They have a team dedicated to koi illnesses and diseases. You need to tell them all of your fish’s symptoms, and they will want to know your water parameters. They might be able to help if it’s at all possible. Sometimes fish surprise us and beat the odds. I would give them a try!

But, you can do something to help keep your other fish healthy! Koi are not meant for small ponds. I won’t say too much because I’m sure others will, but 500-600 gallons is not healthy for koi. Either don’t get ANY more fish, and just keep one koi, change to goldfish, or build a bigger pond. Sorry to come across as negative.
