4 years ago we dredged our pond / lake, since then the eco of the water has changed and the pond was covered in duckweed. Does anyone have any idea how to prevent it happening again this year... we have put at least 3 bales of barley straw scattered in carrot bags around the pond.. any help appreciated.

Duck weed will grow as long as there are nutrients available for it.
Control the source of nutrients to control the growth of duckweed.
Post pictures of your pond and we can help further.

Barley works for controlling algae. Did you have duckweed before dredging? Perhaps the dredging eliminated any plants (which consume nutrients) from the pond. What type of fish do you have? Goldfish love duckweed. How big is your pond?

Our pond is 110 ft x 30 ft. It hasn't any duckweed at the moment but it was thick with it last year.

If your pond receives ground water runoff, a berm to redirect the runoff around the pond could help.
If your pond receives water from a stream, measure the water entering the pond for nitrates and phosphates.
Solutions can come from there.

I use duckweed in my indoor pond as an indicator of how well the plants and substrate are processing organic waste.
I occasionally harvest duckweed as a method of removing excess nutrients.
