Duckweed

Duckweed is completely covering my pond surface. Is this bad? Thanks!
1200g planted diy pond with guppies and cichlids. And a small waterfall.

Hi Lor- it would be good to pull some out so that it doesn't completely cover the surface. While its great for shading the water, it could block the oxygen from the surface. I can't keep duckweed, my koi think its popcorn!

I agree, both Koi and gold fish eat duck weed.

Maybe guppies and cichlids don’t like duckweed. I can’t keep it, either — my Goldie’s love it! But agree that you might want to remove some of it. It makes great compost.

Do you have any pictures of your pond? I see you joined back in 2013. We’d love to see what it looks like now!

if you have a skimmer and keep I clear you should be able to make a huge dent in the concentration.

Thanks guys. Yes, I scooped tons out and will continue to do so on a regular basis I guess. I like the way it looks. I also have another pretty pest: water hyacinth. They're invasive here in Miami but they are nice. I can't have goldies or other conspicuous fish cause the egrets and raccoons eat them up. And the water gets very warm. The tree frogs and plants make up for the fancy fish! I'll post a pic.

If you stop feeding the fish they will eat the duckweed .I know they ate mine into none left
