Hi, we have a brand new pond and want to get the plants going before any decent size fish. What plants can tolerate a possible frost night better? I prefer floating for now. Surface will not freeze, but water temp could go into the 30s for sure probably for another 4-6 weeks on and off.

Was already warned that water hyacinth may not take it.

thanks!

my parrots feather is beginning to grow, pond just jumped up to 60. The iris are growing like crazy. With fish you could try potted lotus, put it in a pot that is higher or as high as the water level, so the fish can't dig in it, with some holes to allow water flow.

i use kitty litter The pond matrix would work, also pea gravel. I don't have enough fish to feed my plants well, so give them the added boost of clay.

The pea gravel would worry me since it probably falls out into the liner now and then unless you cover it with the kitty litter. :)
What do I look for on the bag? Does it say bentonite? Figures, I just went to Walmart last night.
Thanks for the tips.

Creeping Jenny is very hardy here in the Northeast. Last week I went to ShopRite nad bought 2 bunches of Watercress for $1.39 a bunch. Tossed it into the bog filter. Starting to see roots and some of it is sprouting new growth upwards. I am sure two big bunches like this would have cost ten bucks or better at the garden center. I figure if they freeze, I'll just get some more. Couldn't wait any longer- I need green!

I got mine in the bagged salad section of the grocery store. I just stuck some of the stems in a glass of water and they sprouted roots in 2 days.
