So another year and more eggs. Some have hatched and are hiding in the pond. Others have made it into the planter rings. Can they make it staying in the rings full of that many floaters? Do they need some open spots or will they just swim under all those plants and eat the algae off the roots? If so--how long should I let them stay in there? They are about 2-3 weeks now. Spawn was June 23rd.

Thanks

It looks like the holes in your netting are large enough for fry to swim through. They probably like the shelter and food provided by the lettuce and hyacinth. Maybe once they are too big to get out, or once the season is over and they need to go dormant, move them out. For now, though, I am guessing they are feeling happy and safe because they are isolated from the other fish.

Well I had 12 last year. Was just wondering if I should leave the ones in the floater rings alone or take out some floating plants so there is visible water from the top.

Sorry I guess I skimmed the post too fast. I agree with the above post they are fine in there with the plant cover and protection from bigger fish. if they become so big that they can no longer swim out of the holes in the net I would move them out manually.

Finding baby fish is always fun but........the first question is where will you keep the koi if they all make it? If you do not have plans to substantially enlarge your pond or get in the business of selling koi I would let nature take it's course.

That's a very good point. We have already expanding, I don't think that would be an option. I have sold koi before a few years back and have recently spoke with a local pond place about consignment. I didn't bring any over this year, but they said I would be able to. I have 7 from last year that are mostly the same color with only a shade or two apart. Should part with some of them for starters and I also have ghost koi from years ago on a koi-shubunkin hybrid. I have been trying to find a mud pond that would take some of them and a way to transport as they are 6-9" long.

They have a way of surviving............I would not worry about them.
That's hard for me. If I see them, I will worry. I'm not as bad as the first time (last year), I had my boyfriend making all these little caves from rocks where they were hiding to protect them. I was bonkers. :nailbiting: I worry about my fish like my dogs and cat.

Thanks, I do have one ring that is a screen on the bottom, so they can't swim from that one unless they use the 2" top piece. I think that is 1/8 sq.
