Elbows on pectoral fins?

Our pond is populated mostly by a motley assortment of comet mutts of one sort or another. Some Sarasa genealogy in there. We've had a couple of Shubunkins come and go over the years too.

One of the comets with a nice flowing tail has very obvious knuckles (or elbows?) on its pectoral fins. I don't know what to call it, but on the leading edge of the pectoral fins there's an obvious feature that looks like a knuckle. The knuckle is the same orange color as the body, while the fin itself is almost white. Everyone else's pectoral fins just look like fins. Nothing extraordinary.

Does anyone know anything about this? I don't think it's a defect.

I was wrong - there's another comet with knuckles, too, just not as obvious as the first.

If I find them commandeering the best water holes by wailing on the others with tapir legbones I'll be draining the pond looking for the black obelisk
