Trying to figure out if something is wrong with my fish. They are swimming at the top of the pond. They eat and the water is perfect in numbers and the temperature is 80 in water outside temperature is 95. The pond is raise from the ground and has some sand under it to level it and it has stones holding it up. I have a canopy over it most of the time.

Do you have a source of oxygen, like an air disc in the water? In warm water, the oxygen molecules are not as dense as in cooler water, so there is less oxygen per cubic foot as there is in cooler water. The addition of of an air source in the pond is important in hot weather.

Maybe add more air or cool the water or both.

How big is the pond?

Hello and welcome!

How big is the pond and how many fish do you have?

When you say “the numbers are perfect,” can you tell us what those actual numbers are?

300 gallon and I have two air stones. And fountain and pump. I did 20% water removable and refilled with cooler again today.

When the water warms it can not hold as much oxygen as it usualy does at lower temperatures add additional air to the pond

300 gallons is much too small a pond for koi. I'm sorry no one told you this when you bought the fish.

How many koi and how many goldfish do you have?

Could you please post the actual results of the water parameter tests? That will give us a better idea of what is going on. Thanks.

@Lisak1 You have my vote!

Way back when, I suggested a “pin” that listed questions that should be answered for any sick fish-type posts. It’s around somewhere, but the problem is that……I guess there’s no way to direct new posters to that “pin.” (It was a long time ago and I don’t even recall what topic it was under). Maybe we could have a copy and paste thingy where members could add the list of questions to new posts…..? I have no idea, but we do all need to be on the same page.

Found it!

I know there are forums where the rules are no one answers a question without all the necessary details being provided. I'm sure that's a heavy mod load and likely impossible here to monitor, but it sure would be great if we were able to do it. With the way the internet works people can stumble on a post and read an answer to a question that has no context or background and the next thing you know we're all doing water changes and salting our ponds.

This post is a perfect example - the correct answer is"too many fish; not enough water". No further answers required.

During a heatwave, I’ve frozen gallon jugs of water and put them in my 50 gallon pond… even though I have good aeration and water quality, I had to do something to get the water temperature down…The fish congregated around the jugs..!!! I only have done this a few times over a few years, but it definitely worked…never lost a fish…(if you put the jugs under shade, they last ALOT longer)
