Last summer I had my garden pond cleaned, the pump replaced and a water feature added. The water feature is a little fierce. In fact my neighbours have mentioned the noise of the splashing water, in the nicest possible way. How can I slow the water down, maybe introduce a smaller bore pipe. Please bear in mind I an a lady alone so it will have to be something simple and easy.

You can change the sound of the water several ways - slowing it down or changing how it hits. Some photos of your set up will help - is this a water fall? A fountain?

how the water falls and what it lands on are key to the sound that the water will make add volume of water to this and it can multiply.

If your water is landing in a deep section of water it will sound more like a drum . shallow waters will have more of a tinny high pitched sound by comparison. when it lands on a flat rock that is also laying flat this will make all kinds of noise as the oxygen mixes in and it splashes throughout. Simple solution to this long explanation is to take the flat rock or any smooth rock slip it into the falls and make the water slide down the rock and not fall onto it splashing. the difference can be amazing .

Second option is to split the pipe cut down on the amount of water to the waterfall. but before we get into those avenues some pictures would help so we can talk apples to apples

Thank you for taking the time to reply. Hopefully I have attached a photo of the spout in full flow. I can lessen this a little by putting my hand Under it and when I take it away it is a calmer flow but still too noisy. The photo is of it at it least powerful. The cloth is there to quieten it down a bit. Seems to work as a temporary measure but looks awful.

You could attach a weir spillway so the water spreads before it lands in the water.
Something like this:

My hubby made me one out of stainless steel for my falls:

You could use something plastic and cut it to make one too.

This guy made one out of paving stone and a piece of pond liner:

Built the pond last year using Hampton wall. Just added the spillway a few weeks ago. Very inexpensive way to get a water sheer or spillway. Two layers of regular pave stone for back and sides, down to one layer at front and covered it with a piece of pond liner. Seems to work pretty good.

Thanks for this idea. I may be able to fit a tray or similar under the pump box. May have to find someone to bend it to a slight slope. I’ll give it a go when the weather is a bit warmer.

The spillway is great idea. I did not use one myself because I like the splashing sounds and spillways are fairly silent from what I have seen. I remember someone saying in a review of a spill way that they put stones on it to create some sound and a splashing flow.

You can see @GBBUDD and I are wired exactly the same.

A spillway would help, but falling water hitting water will always make some sound. If you can make it simply flow down the face of a waterfall and glide into the pond below, you may not hear much.

But again - your neighbor is over the top sensitive on this one.

They can be a bit touchy, but I try to stay on their good side. 14000gph, that must be some set up.
