So today I changed out the lava rock in my filter (DrCase's suggestion) for plastic fencing material. I see most of the DIY filter containers are pretty big. Mine is only about 6 gallons in size. Is this big enough for my 500 gallon pond?

A 20 to 25 gal container would do your pond well
IF you have the room a 30 to 55 gal drum would turn your water super clear
If it needs to be shorter a stock tank is a lot lower
You can even cut a drum down to make it work out for ya

I see, so basically bigger is better in this case :) As I'm not really able to dig mine up and change it easily, could I possibly add another filter?

Yes Add away
one of the things that lets the Skippy style and the drum filter work so good is having a drain halve on the bottom to flush out the waste
Keep that in your plans

Cool, will work up a plan to add then! Thats actually the reason I cant easily change my current filter, the bottom drain is burried and routed around the back of the pond, under about 2 foot of dirt.
