During our visit to a fish hatchery. The owner, that has been running the hatchery for 30 years, showed me the filter they use in their up to 1200 gallon ponds. She said it was the best one she has ever used. To clean all you need to do is wash the very top filter pad. Never wash all the filter material. At end of season wash put away.

Here is the filter and a picture of some of her fish in a pond filtered by it. She had just started the pond up a few days ago.

She says she never has green water, string algae etc in the ponds.

She said to make sure to get the filter that is not used under water but on the side of the pond. A lot easier to clean and maintain.

These are her personnel fish, mainly fan tails, beautiful fan tails.

Tetrapond trickle filter. I have one. They make 2 larger ones too. A very easy Diy build. There's actually 2 pads.one mechanical filter. And one activated carbon fines chemical pad.

She showed me some plastic things in the bottom of the filter. like bio, then the pads, then a skinny pad she says is all she rinses, is the skinny pad.

I have never used them, she was just telling me since I mentioned how great her water looked. Some of her fan tails in that tank are over six years old.

Bioballs is correct. Carbon pad on top of them. And a blue mechanical on top. Top inlet is a venturied spray bar. Water trickles thru pads and over bioballs and out.
But a filter should not be rated for a ponds size.. It should be rated for bioload. Add a few more fish and feed like I do..that filter won't look so good.

Well she is tickled with how they work even if they are old type filters.
