While lava rock works, it's heavy, clogs up fairly quickly and is difficult to clean.

I've used Matala mats with great success. They're light, durable, easy to clean and are available in different mesh sizes allowing for a customized filtration gradient.

Couple the Matala mats with mesh bags filled with Bio-Balls and you've got a filtration system that's very user-friendly.

I like Matala as well. So easy to clean with a good flick or solid bump on a hard surface knocks all of the crud out. Then super easy to rinse.

@Trevor You can really use just about anything as bio-media. Look for something with a lot of surface area (that's where the beneficial bacteria will accumulate) and that will allow good water flow all around it. Nothing too dense -- water will take the easiest route and will likely go around and not through. Good water flow is essential for good bacteria growth. Some suggestions: bio-balls, Matalla mats, plastic strapping (sold for ponds, but it's basically the material they use to secure packaging - sold in rolls), rolled up plastic fencing/mesh......plastic hair rollers, dish scrubbies (the plastic, meshy kind). You name it and it's probably been used. What is going to be the most effective is what works best for you, in your filter, so don't be afraid to try different things.

Be sure that your setup has the water flowing through good mechanical filtration before it gets to the bio part. If the bio material gets all clogged up with crud, it's not going to work as effectively, if at all.

What color Matala mat would you recommend for a biofalls?

Green is the medium weave, and the most often used.

Black = Coare
Green = Medium
Blue = Fine

The most commonly used combinations are Green over Black, or Blue over Green. "Matala" is a generic term, AquaScape makes an identical product.

This can not be overemphasized.
After 20 years, I still prefer Lava Rock. With it I get denitrification also.

Lava rock is what my dad used and I have never had a problem with it .It has never really clogged on me and all summer I never clean my filters .The plants in the filters need root trimmed but that is all .
