I like Matala as well. So easy to clean with a good flick or solid bump on a hard surface knocks all of the crud out. Then super easy to rinse. While lava rock works, it's heavy, clogs up fairly quickly and is difficult to clean.
I've used Matala mats with great success. They're light, durable, easy to clean and are available in different mesh sizes allowing for a customized filtration gradient.
Couple the Matala mats with mesh bags filled with Bio-Balls and you've got a filtration system that's very user-friendly.

Be sure that your setup has the water flowing through good mechanical filtration before it gets to the bio part. If the bio material gets all clogged up with crud, it's not going to work as effectively, if at all.
What kind of filter do you have? I always think TT when I hear lava rock. This can not be overemphasized.
After 20 years, I still prefer Lava Rock. With it I get denitrification also.
