Our first pond build is taking shape. This is a 300 gallon buried stock tank pond with a slightly raised bog filter approximately 24% the area of the pond and a small waterfall. No fish at the moment; we may add some very small ones next year, when things are more established. Still needs a lot of finessing, but all the fundamentals are there. Thanks again to everyone for their advice! We're totally new to water gardening so we still have lots to learn. I'm sure the adventures are just beginning...

you did a really amazing job hiding the liner, especially for a preformed. And it is wonderful all of the plants you have in there!

indeed, your pond adventures are just beginning.

Fabulous!
Smart on your part to go with bog filtration from the start.
I wasted so much effort and money on store bought filters and UV lights that were inadequate. Then I was inspired by the people on this site to build a bog. My water has never been this clear in over a decade of ponding.

Lovely! My pond store said if the plants can live in it, (gold)fish can live in it too. Fish will provide fertilizer for the plants and help eat the algae that will come, especially in a new pond. I would personally add fish sooner rather than later :) It makes pond staring a little more entertaining too when the fish are swimming about.

Stick with gold fish maybe even look at fan tails. I have only fantails in my hot tub pond, 300 gallons, the stay small, breed slowly so less chance of overwhelming the pond quickly. I even had about 3 babies this year. The second picture is a fry.

The cam is crooked, the plastic stuff seen is making shelves for the plants.

I'm assuming you're planning for goldfish, judging by the size of your pond. They won't bother most plants. The small amount of nibbling they do is harmless. Koi can be a bit more challenging with plants as they are so much larger.

Is it necessary or helpful to protect water lilies or other plants from nibbling fish? If so, how do you go about it?
I have a lot of goldfish, shubunkins in my fish filled ponds. The ponds are full of plants and they exist well with the fish. I do watch the fish eating on the plants but just nibbles. I don't feed the pond fish very often.
