Does anyone cover the intakes on their pumps to prevent fish from getting sucked up? If yes, what do you use?

What make of pump do you have? Submersibles always come equipped with some form of intake pre-filter.or mesh/

Mine is external. I put a 5 gallon bucket around the intake with a ton of 1/4 inch holes drilled in it. That reduced the suction over all, I don't find critters in the leaf basket of the pump.

I use a prefilter basket and then also a mesh bag on mine.

Not much to tell, it's picture above with a pump inside. It's just a picture I found online but it looks just like mine.

I also have a mesh bag.
    They're cheap on Ebay.
    Search "pond pump bag".

I know this is an old thread but here goes anyway.
In the past I bred a lot of chiclids and had a large 5000lt grow out pond for the little fella's and had a bit of trouble to start off with fish getting sucked up into the filter. I put the pump inside a milk crate wrapped in 90% shade cloth and it worked a treat.
    Cheers

Window screen works also but both can clog and cause the pump to over work .I got laguna pump because they come with a full cage that goes over the pump and are energy efficient
