Hi all new to this fishy business couple of weeks ago 1 of my fish died so brought a microscope to do a scrape on another that’s looks a little lethargic and a few of my fish are flashing I’ve scraped 3 fish and found flukes on the 1 looking a bit down it looks to be body and gill flukes any ideas of treatments that actually work I’ve already purchased some Blagdon all in 1 which says kills parasites fungus and white spot is it worth using? Thanks Chris

Hello and welcome!

Tell us about your pond set-up. How many gallons, what kind of fish (and how many), what kind of filtration?

I read this today on Koiphen.com about flukes. It was written in a post by Russell Peters, a well known koi expert and breeder:

"Any of the fluke products only work well depending on the circumstances surrounding the use and proper application of the product. Many people don't even know the true volume of their ponds and that can cause and issue if it is under dosed. Many of the fluke products only work well if they are ingested by the Koi so that it gets onto the blood stream of the Koi. No ingestion - does not work. Many ponds are also very dirty. I don't meant he kind of dirt you can see and it has nothing to do with water quality parameters. It has everything to do with dissolved organics. I see a lot of people post that their "water tested perfect" yet I can see in the pictures that their water is not perfect. Dissolved organics will make many medications useless as it "absorbs" the product. Finally, there is only one fluke product that works without the Koi having to ingest it. It is FlukeM."

I hope you can get the fluke issue under control. The next thing you might want to think about is rehoming some koi. 20 koi in 1126 gallons is crowded and as the koi grow you will end up with water quality issues.

From what I just read, it sounds like you need a big qt tank, with a mix of pond water and fresh de chlorinated water, and treat them in there. I haven’t had koi, haven’t had flukes, so please research weather the flukes can contaminate the entire pond first, and if so, you’ll need to set up a way to treat the pond itself. But yes, you do seem overstocked, or will be once they grow bigger.
