I run a 4000 gpm submersible pump in the bottom of my 1000 gallon pond through a bio filter and out to a waterfall. I stick the pump inside a 17" x17" screen I bought on Amazon and just secure it with some zip ties. That works fairly well except that I'm in zone seven, and I get lots of algae and scum buildup during the summer. The screen clogs up bad enough to severely restrict the flow about three or four times during the summer and I have to vacuum the bottom or pull the pump out to clean it. It takes quite a bit of time and it's a lot of trouble. The problem seems to be that the screen bunches up and does not provide enough filtering surface area. I looked at some stainless steel baskets to put the pump in, but they're pretty pricey.

Would some sort of light framework to put inside the screen and keep it stretched out to its max on all sides reduce this clogging problem. Anybody done anything like this?

I'd try using PVC pipe to build the frame. Some have used it to support netting above the pond.

In a small pond its hard to build a larger screen that wont clog. But it sounds like your screen is too fine. Id see if you can use something like an aquablock with no screens
