I think this just started last night and it's happening tonight. MATING CALLS! LOL
I have 2 frogs giving off this loud whistle. This is hilarious. BUT, my neighbors are going to kill me. How long does this go on for.

As I'm typing my wife is on the other computer and is telling me they're American toads. She's on Youtube, LOL
I didn't know toads went in water.

Surprise surprise

I had so many frogs in my pond I had to net the eggs from the pond and put them in a bucket and take them down to the creek .I could hardly see the fish from all the pearls of eggs .

I have had thousands of eggs, and tads, don't see that many toads around once they morph. Do have a lot less crickets though, love that!

Do you think my fish will eat most of the eggs and tadpoles.
I just got home from work. It's quiet out there. It must be too cold. My took a great picture last night. I'll post it up this afternoon.

They will eat some, I have had tads and eggs in my big pond with the fish. Some make it some don't. The frogs, toads tend to lay in the smaller fish less ponds.

I get tons of toads every year and my fish never eat their eggs. Once they morph we help them make it to the creek so there are no mowing accidents :) I think they only go in water to breed from what I have read. Let the fun begin at your house he he.

That is a really neat looking fellow/gal Mike! Do both the males and females have those big throat sacks they blow up like that?

I only saw the male toads blowing that sac up

They have a round vocal sac under their chin which expands with
air that is released as they call. The stretchy
skin on the throat of the male toad becomes
darker due to its constant expansion and
reduction during mating season. American toad
males often sing together in choruses, and each
male’s call can last as long as 30 seconds. It is
thought that synchronous calling is more
effective at attracting females.
When a female American toad arrives at
the breeding pool the male grasps her around the
body right behind the forearms in the amphibian
mating posture called amplexus. As the female
releases her 3,000 to 20,000 eggs in the shallow
water, they are fertilized by the smaller male.
Because fertilization takes place outside the
body it is called external fertilization. The eggs,
which are usually attached to underwater
vegetation, are arranged in double strings
covered in a clear, gelatinous material.

We love the sounds of our toads singing to us at night. All of our neighbors do too. It reminds us of camping. We have had 5 sets of toads lay there eggs in our pond this year. The last 2 just finished this weekend. We already have toadpoles swimming around and now we are back to having the long strings of eggs. I was going to put all of my plants in floating planter rings that I made until I saw one of them was covered in toad eggs.

Thanks for clearing that up for me addy! Never seen any toads around here anywhere. So they lay strings of eggs eh? I'll have to keep my eyes open for them when I'm near some wild ponds. Is it good to have them in our ponds or did I hear they eat the fish or was that just the bullfrogs?

BD so now ya gotta wait till they all hatch before you get your rings back. Wonder if you could move the eggs w/o hurting them?

It takes maybe a week for the eggs to become toadpoles. I love watching them grow every day. Many won't make it. Some will, others become food to something. I know our turtle loves to snack on the toadpoles. It's all part of the cycle of life.

Well then that's not long to wait to get your rings back and you'll be back in business!
I learned that when I was little about turtles snacking on tadpoles. I put some tadpoles in w/ my turtles...........thought they'd make great friends when they turned into frogs..................oh no, turtles thanked me for the nice buffet!
