When this little guy came to me, almost 8 weeks ago now, he appeared mostly white with a red blotch on his back. over the weeks the red color spread until the only white visible from above was his lips. The red spread down his sides and joined the white on his underside. Now it appears that the red is receding. Any guesses if he will retain any red at all, become pure white, or just keep changing color to confuse me? One of his pond mates who had been orange with a lot of black on his back is now losing the black, but I expected that.

Is the fish healthy?
Yes. He is smaller than his pond mates, all arrived at the same time, roughly the same size. He has grown but not as much as the others. Water chemistry is fine. He darts in among everyone else when I do feed them, and eats. He is the most curious and friendliest of the group. For example, if I am moving the filter to clean it the rest swim off and hide, this guy swims over and watches. I watch them all for signs of distress.

Color changes are indeed natural and happen all the time in fish. Some say it’s influenced by pond conditions. Others say it’s just in the genes. We have one fish that routinely goes from orange to white and back again.

Now that sounds so cool! Is it a koi or a goldfish?

Measels fish? I cannot afford a pond big enough for a koi and hadn't considered non-comet goldfish before. Maybe in the new pond when it is set up

Haha! Measles fish! I love my sarrasas and comets. They're bright spots in the pond. And they cost me zero because they breed like RABBITS!

Sometimes I wonder what my pond would look like if I had just goldfish. The bio load from my biggest fish is probably equal to all of addys fish. Being home more sure hasn't hurt the ponds health that for sure.

I did message Yael yesterday she was hanging out in her homes bomb shelter. So glad I don't live there ! and hope this crap comes to an end fast but it's not looking good.

Your big koi are beautiful... I loved ours, but one devastating loss and it was goldfish for me. Now we only have a few that have names... the rest are just "the fish".
