most sights that sell pumps tell you the size but they use there's for 1 pump and I prefer 2 pumps this way if one goes out you have back up and are not in a sheer panic trying to get another one in 100 degree temps or zero temps .Had that happen with my first pond ,not fun .

And if you can't do 2 pumps use a real air pump for aeration instead of one powered by the water pump. That way if one of the other dies you still have water movement.

I bought an aerator but sold it to my neighbor .The only problem with one pump is that if that pump does go out and you have a filter and it is really hot out things can go bad real fast .I know my first pond I was in a panic to find a pump .

Looking at the "How to choose pipe and pump2" pdf in the second post:

It suggests that a 6000 GPH pump would need a 3 inch diameter pipe to maintain a velocity under 5 FPS.

But, many of these pumps are designed with 2 inch fittings.

What gives?

Good question Shelly. Sorry, but other questions fall into play here. I am not the expert so bear with me.
Wiil the 6000 gph pump really be moving 6000 gph
What is your total dynamic head height
What is the friction loss total
All affected by fittings, valves and other inline components,
and so many more numbers to run.
The outlet pipe from the pump can be stepped up right at the pump housing.
Schedule 80 pvc has greater tolerance than does schedule 40.
Please see the Irritrol tech specs .pdf pages 92 thru end

Again, I am not an expert on this, but there are surely plenty out here.

Feed back is always welcome, thanks.
