Hi all, after almost thirty years of thinking about building a pond, collecting lots of nice rocks and finding a pleasing lay-out in our garden I have started digging the hole! I have been too busy with (paid) work and home improvement projects to start this one, but I figure I need to get those rocks placed while I can still do it.
On-line forums are such a great way to learn from the experiences of others and I appreciate everyone who is willing to spend time sharing information and helping, even though questions from newbies might be basic or answered before.
Thank you! Patrick

Welcome to the forum Patrick.

Better late than never. I bought a liner on clearance and had it for many years before I finally built my in ground pond.

At 77 YO I agree. My daily to do list of home and life maintenance overflows (along with some hiking, exercise videos and coffee chat groups)- never ending. Glad to be able bodied, while a bit slower with less stamina than in my 40s. As you say - take it slow and don't hurt ourselves. Thank you for the inspiration to get out and fertilize everything today (along with laundry, reconcile accounts, and a few other things).

you mean JW gets you there safe with no injuries :)funny how i never listen to my own advice HUH . Just came down from the attic after taking up 2 more rolls of r30 insulation as taking the chimeny out caused air to be sucked out the flue trap . geeze what a nightmare . Almost got suck again going out to far to the soffit to put a board on the chimney up there and placing insulation around it and ontop of it . Had to roll back all the R 30 rolls to get out to it and put plywood sheets down to crawl on . then had to put all the insulation I rolled back down

Be careful we don't heal as fast as we used to!

If this is your first pond i would Beyond Strongly advise that you share what your thinking as to your build. Like you said tons of life experiences here and we may be able to point out a better way or give you food for thought in buildingbyour pond.

Let's start with the smalls how big
How deep
What type of filter
What type of liner
Pond or raised pond. Etc etc

at least you are thinking ahead . I just did it and did not think about and did not know much of anything about kinds of fish . I bought 2 koi from a farm in NC that sld fish for ponds . I bought 2 koi for 50 cents and had no clue that they would get huge . They sold in their greenhouse tanks what they called ugly fish for dirt cheap . Not sure how fish were considered ugly but cheap fit my pocketbook . Thank god i only bought 2 koi . I bought butterfly and fancy tails also from the fish farm . I learned from my mistake fast with the kio . Thing is the fish are not really hard to take care of in the end . It is all about water quality and there I followed what my dad and i did o our organic farm when we built a pond . He used lava rock and that is what I used and he used the clean out water from he pond tank filter in the garden . i am 72 now so this was a long time ago . I visited the house a couple of years ago and the new owners still ave the pond going but fancied it up with a stream and huge waterfall but they still use lava rock in the filter . New owner has owned the house since 1984 and he told me when he did the stream and waterfall that they wanted to put in this fancy water filter and he told them no . this works and has worked for years . Why fix what works . Plus he said he almost fainted at the price over 3 thousand dollars just for the filter system
