Hello there! My husband and I are newbies to backyard ponds. We bought our house in Atlanta last December and the previous owners had neglected their two ponds after the wife passed away.
One of our first projects was to redo them. After one day of attempted clean out we got smart and hired professionals. They did an amazing job.
Our larger pond is about 1000 gallons and is in the backyard. We've got 6 comet goldfish currently and an uncountable number of babies. It also has a waterfall and UV filter.
The smaller pond is in the front yard and it's about 300-400 gallons. No fish in that one but there is a babbling brook waterfall.
Our first year has been crazy... Maintaining the ponds themselves has been easy enough but the fish have taken a lot of our attention. We started out with 10 comets that were medium size (3-4") and spent some $s on them. We're quite certain all the snakes we spotted throughout the summer were snacking on them because we lost all but one. Then we spent less than $2 on ten 15 cent comets at PetSmart and they've thrived. We've lost 4 but seem to have stopped the bloodbath. We captured and released about 5 snakes all summer.
Both ponds have tons of leopard frogs and tadpoles as well.
We battle water loss and now leaves but we're managing well enough. We constructed a DIY leaf tent over the back pond since it sits directly under a large maple tree. So far, so good.
Anyway, we're glad to have found this forum so we can learn from some fellow pond lovers!
